John Everett Millais, Circle Of
English (1829-1896), O/C, 19.5” (H) x 17.6” (W), Original Frame, Excellent Condition
This extraordinary Pre-Raphaelite painting depicts a Victorian Era woman contemplating an issue of the day. This 19th century work was most likely painted by the circle of John Everett Millais. Millais and others of this community wished to reform art by rejecting what they considered to be the mechanistic approach first adopted by the Mannerist artists who succeeded Raphael and Michelangelo. They believed that the Classical poses and elegant compositions of Raphael in particular had been a corrupting influence on the academic teaching of art. Hence the name "Pre-Raphaelite.”
