Jessie MacGregor
British (1879-1919), O/C, Image: 21 1/2" (W) x 26 1/2" (H)
A delightful painting by Jessie MacGregor of two children admiring the Jerusalem Cross of a robed monk, probably just outside a monastery. The Royal Academy held an exhibition in the early 1900s featuring women artists and Jessie MacGregor was one of the most esteemed participants. In every way this painting is superb, spurring the imagination of the viewer on what exactly could be in the thoughts of the children. The talented Jessie MacGregor lived a tragically brief life. Nevertheless, she is a Member of the Royal Academy of Art and her paintings can be found in collections in Britain and across Europe and the U.S. Housed in a period, carved frame. Provenance: Acquired this painting from a private party in Princeton, New Jersey.
