Christopher H. Shearer
American (1840-1926), O/C, 19.6" (H) x 29.9" (W) Signed l/r, dated 1896
This magnificent landscape is by Christopher High Shearer, a well-listed American artist born in Reading, Pennsylvania. He studied in Germany and France, and also exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He is known primarily for his large landscapes of the Berks County countryside. Many of his works are in the collection of Reading Museum and private collections in Canada, Australia, Germany, and the United States. At the age of eighteen he began to study art under F.D. Devlan and J.H. Raser. By twenty-seven years of age, Shearer was a recognized artist in America. This is one of the finest examples of Shearer’s work that we have seen.
