Frans Masereel
Dutch (1889-1972), O/C, 17.5” (W) x 14.5” (H), Signed in Monogram, l/r, Verso
Frans Masereel was one of the most prolific painters of his day, and was especially well known for his woodcuts. A pacifist in World War I, he tried to make his art accessible to the ordinary man. Many of his paintings were banned by the Nazis. But he rejected "political" art and party affiliation, condemning all enslavements, oppression, war and violence, and injustice. This image is of a striking forested landscape with bold brush strokes and heavy lines.
