Narcisse Dia de la Pena
(1808-1876), O/B, 12.9” (H) x 11” (W), Signed

This is an extremely captivating 19th century scene by Narcisse Diaz. The painting is signed "N. Diaz" for Narcisse Diaz de la Pena (1808-1876), a well-known French artist. Diaz was born in Bordeaux of Spanish parents. At the age of ten, he was orphaned. Diaz became a porcelain painter and he studied briefly with the painter Souchon. His early paintings featuring fetes galantes catered to the popular taste for 18th century style Rococo and resulted in financial success for the young artist. Diaz first visited Barbizon in 1835 and in 1837 he met Rousseau. In his later life Díaz became a painter of the forest and spent much time at Barbizon. Díaz exhibited at the Paris Salon, and was decorated in 1851. After 1871, his works became fashionable and rose gradually in the estimation of collectors, and he worked constantly and successfully.
