George Davidson, N.A.
American (1889-1965), O/B, Image: 15 1/2 (H) x 24 (W), Signed

Presented here is a superb mythological landscape by George Davidson, who won broad acclaim as one of the most important Muralists of the 20th Century. This imaginative work by Davidson (1889-1965), a member of the National Academy of Art, shows the versatility and depth of this outstanding artisan. Davidson gained fame by painting murals at Barnard College, Yale and other places, a fact that reduced his commercial output of traditional paintings. In fact, a number of paintings were housed until recently by the Mattatuck Historical Society's Museum at Waterbury, Connecticut. This particular painting has significance with Davidson's estate stamp verso. Born in Russia, Davidson’s work can be found in Davenport’s, The Artists Bluebook, Who Was Who in American Art. Art Across America, and other sources. Provenance: 1. Painted about 1940 by the hand of George Davidson. 2. Maintained in Davidson’s personal collection until death. 3. In 1965, placed in Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, Connecticut. 4. In 2009, Museum held private sale of Davidson’s paintings. 5. In 2009, private dealer sells painting to Joseph A. Kinney.
